Dear Reader, When Charlotte Nicely came to me, she knew her website wasn’t speaking clearly to her clients. Too much marketing-speak was getting between her expertise and the people who could use it. She knew something needed to change. She wasn’t sure how to fix it. Her business had evolved, with offers for different marketing problems: the solopreneur who unexpectedly acquired a marketing job, the established business doing plenty of marketing without knowing whether it’s working. She also wanted a page for referral partners. Everyone needed to find what they needed on the site without a decoder ring. And yes, Nicely really is her name. Having worked with her, I can confirm she lives up to it. Excellent truth in advertising. Charlotte brought more than 20 years of marketing experience, thoughtful strategy, and audience research to our collaboration. We worked through what each audience needed to hear and put it into language that sounds like the practical, candid person they’ll meet. One of my favorite lines from the finished site is: “You don’t have to clean up the mess before you call.” Which, frankly, would defeat the purpose. But it also speaks to something familiar: feeling like we should know the answer before we ask the question. Charlotte didn’t know exactly what needed to change on her website when she came to me. She knew it wasn’t saying what she needed it to say. That was enough to start. Take a look at the new Nicely Consulting website. If your website is still describing the business you were three business decisions ago, let’s talk. You don’t need to arrive with the answer, either. Congratulations, Charlotte. It’s been a pleasure putting this into words with you. Best, |

Dear Reader, One of the occupational hazards of being a copywriter is that people sometimes think they need to know exactly what kind of copywriting they need before they call me. Which is a little like knowing what’s wrong with your car before you take it to the mechanic. If you already knew that, you’d be halfway to fixing it yourself. Most people come to me knowing something much simpler: this isn’t working the way I want it to. Maybe it’s a homepage that no longer reflects the business, a...
Dear Reader, I think there’s a misconception about hiring a copywriter that may be keeping some very annoyed business owners unnecessarily annoyed. You think you need to have A Project. A new website. A brand overhaul. An email campaign. Something substantial enough to warrant Bringing In A Copywriter. You don’t. You don’t need to do a gut reno of your website if changing the curtains will do. Maybe your website is basically fine, but the opening no longer explains what you do. Maybe your...
Dear Reader, My friend Carrie Flynn of Virtual Simplicity has a phrase I’ve loved since the first time I heard her use it: Random acts of marketing. It’s how she describes all those disconnected marketing things businesses do without a larger strategy tying them together. And it’s perfect. Four words. Immediately understandable. Entirely Carrie. That’s the kind of language I listen for when I’m talking with someone about their business. Carrie wasn’t trying to come up with a clever tagline...
