Dear Reader, One of the occupational hazards of being a copywriter is that people sometimes think they need to know exactly what kind of copywriting they need before they call me. Which is a little like knowing what’s wrong with your car before you take it to the mechanic. If you already knew that, you’d be halfway to fixing it yourself. Most people come to me knowing something much simpler: this isn’t working the way I want it to. Maybe it’s a homepage that no longer reflects the business, a bio that feels strangely disconnected from the person it describes, or a service that makes perfect sense when you explain it over coffee but turns into a word salad the minute you try to write about it. That’s enough information to start a conversation. Part of what I bring to the work is the ability to look at what’s in front of us and figure out whether we have a writing problem, a messaging problem, or something underneath both that needs to be sorted out first. Sometimes the answer is a rewrite; sometimes a surgical edit will do. And every once in a while, the words are perfectly fine and we discover that they’re trying to solve the wrong problem. You don’t have to figure that out before you call me. That’s part of what you’re calling me for. If there’s something in your business you keep circling because you know it needs attention but aren’t entirely sure what kind, book a Clarity Call. We can start with what you know and figure out the rest from there. Best, |

Dear Reader, I think there’s a misconception about hiring a copywriter that may be keeping some very annoyed business owners unnecessarily annoyed. You think you need to have A Project. A new website. A brand overhaul. An email campaign. Something substantial enough to warrant Bringing In A Copywriter. You don’t. You don’t need to do a gut reno of your website if changing the curtains will do. Maybe your website is basically fine, but the opening no longer explains what you do. Maybe your...
Dear Reader, My friend Carrie Flynn of Virtual Simplicity has a phrase I’ve loved since the first time I heard her use it: Random acts of marketing. It’s how she describes all those disconnected marketing things businesses do without a larger strategy tying them together. And it’s perfect. Four words. Immediately understandable. Entirely Carrie. That’s the kind of language I listen for when I’m talking with someone about their business. Carrie wasn’t trying to come up with a clever tagline...
Dear Reader, Ask someone to describe their brand voice, and there’s a pretty good chance you’ll hear some combination of: Warm. Professional. Approachable. Well, sure. You’re surely not going to say you want to sound cold, unapproachable, and meaner than bull briar. Those words tell me how you want people to experience you. They don’t tell me what it sounds like to be in a room with you. That’s what I’m listening for. The phrase you keep coming back to. The story you tell when you’re trying...
