something that scares me

Let me start with a confession: I don’t like candles. At all.

There’s probably some deep-seated past-life trauma at play here—burned at the stake, maybe? I’m sure you already thought that, so I’m simply putting it out there.

The real kicker for me is birthday cakes. Let me tell you, you’ve never heard Happy Birthday sung faster than when I’m in the room with a cake ablaze. It’s less a serenade and more an auctioneer chant: “happybirthdaytoyougoingoncegoingtwicesold!”

Why are we setting perfectly good desserts on fire and then standing around singing while molten wax drips precariously close to the frosting? Whose idea was this? I would like to speak to the manager.

But sometimes, stepping out of your comfort zone leads to incredible opportunities. Case in point: I recently had the pleasure (and yes, irony) of writing for Get Fresh Candles, which creates sustainable, customizable candles perfect for corporate gifting and branded experiences.

Here’s what made this project so intriguing:

👉 Pivoting the Message: They initially targeted B2C buyers, but I repositioned the messaging to appeal to wholesale buyers—corporate event planners, HR teams, and marketing execs looking for next-level gifting solutions.

Despite my personal candle aversion, I dug into the copy and turned their features into benefits, emphasizing why these candles are perfect for your business. Think about it: a sustainable, chic product that showcases your brand with every flicker of light. (Just keep the fire away from me, okay?)

So, what’s the takeaway?

Stepping out of your comfort zone—whether writing about something that scares you or rethinking your business messaging—can open up incredible doors. If you’ve been feeling stuck with your own copy or messaging, I’d love to help you light the way (sans actual flames, of course).
