Dear Reader, We may be getting ready to celebrate the end of summer, but today is my Very Boston Super Bowl: Allston Christmas. For the uninitiated, this is the biggest move day of the year across Greater Boston, and the sidewalks of Allston become a treasure hunt of furniture, lamps, questionable couches, and the occasional perfectly good bookshelf just waiting for its second act. It is chaos. It is community. It is, in my life at least, a holiday. And in what remains one of my finer moments—and something I haven’t mentioned in at least three days—I brought Allston Christmas to the global stage when I placed in the Top 3 for Global Humor in the Erma Bombeck Writing Competition. You’re welcome, globe. Because nothing says “international acclaim” quite like a curbside kitchen table and a dream. But here’s the thing. Allston Christmas works because it’s a reset. People are moving on. Moving up. Moving out. Letting go of what no longer fits and making space for what does. Which, if we’re being honest, is not a bad lens for this time of year. Because while everyone else is squeezing the last drops out of summer, this is usually when that quiet thought starts creeping in: “This website… might need some attention.” Not today. Today, you’re busy spotting a perfectly good end table on the curb and convincing yourself you have room for it. But soon. Because Q4 is when decisions get made. And what you’re noticing now? That’s what informs them. So enjoy the holiday. And if your website has been giving you that same “we might need to do something about this” feeling, especially if you're in an industry where “getting it wrong” isn’t only inconvenient—it’s risky… You know where to find me. Dear Reader, Ask someone to describe their brand voice, and there’s a pretty good chance you’ll hear some combination of: Warm. Professional. Approachable. Well, sure. You’re surely not going to say you want to sound cold, unapproachable, and meaner than bull briar. Those words tell me how you want people to experience you. They don’t tell me what it sounds like to be in a room with you. That’s what I’m listening for. The phrase you keep coming back to. The story you tell when you’re trying...
Hi Reader, One of the challenges of running a business for a long time is that you stop noticing things. The language you use every day feels ordinary because you've been saying it for years. The problems you solve seem obvious because you've solved them hundreds of times. The questions clients ask over and over again begin to feel so familiar that it's hard to imagine someone not understanding the answer. I've come to think of that as living inside the bottle. You can't read the label from...
Hi Reader, Years ago, an insurance agency that offered both personal and commercial insurance hired me to write a client newsletter. The goal was simple. They wanted to stay in touch throughout the year so clients didn't feel like the only time they heard from their insurance agent was when it was time to renew a policy. That made perfect sense. We didn't spend much time reminding people that accidents happen or that they should review their policies. Instead, we showed what good insurance...
